General Athletic Products was based in Greenville, Ohio, and made truly beautiful sportswear, much of it for local Ohio teams, in the early 20th century. Pieces by General are quite rare today, though if you can find one, they're quite special.
One of the things that really distinguishes early American sportswear, especially from the '20s, '30s and '40s, is the fabric and quality of construction. This General Athletic piece is from the '30s, handstitched and made of a gorgeous mesh cotton blend. Dyed a stunning deep red, it has stitched patch lettering on the front which reads "Sidney" and the number 16 at the hem, chainstitched by hand. A truly special piece of early athletic wear. Made in Greenville, Ohio, USA.
A few holes/tears and some loose stitching.
