Originating from the Republic of Benin, West Africa, home of the Dahomey Warrior’s (depicted as the Female Warrior Battalion in Marvel’s Black Panther), Zahara’s Benin fan is an exquisite piece of art that is woven from ethically sourced sisal straws, also known as Vetiver grass, and leather scraps in effort to reduce waste.
The Benin fan is an eco-conscious multipurpose accessory. It can be used as a hand fan, as a fashion accessory, or as wall art.
Each fan is hand woven and hand dyed and measures approximately 19 inches in length and 11 inches in width.
By purchasing this fan, you are supporting traditional craft preservation on the shores of Cotonou and are contributing towards increasing community engagement and creating opportunities for poverty reduction within marginalized communities in Benin.

A note from the vendor:
Zahara, in our native language Kiswahili, means “to flower or to bloom.” We exist to empower and sustain the longevity of East African craftsmanship & the livelihoods of these communities as we bridge the gap between African artisans and individuals in the Diaspora.
Our products, though contemporary, exist to pay homage to Kenyan culture, customs & traditions rooted in Maasai-themed products and beadwork practices.
By purchasing our products, you support the payment of fair wages to the curio artisans that source and up-cycle product materials locally and ethically.
