Sand Knitting Mills Co. of Chicago, or Sand Knit, is a legendary name amongst American producers of athletic knitwear and sports jerseys. Founded in 1921, Sand Knit was not only one of the only factories producing the actual jerseys used on the field by multiple leagues - the NFL and MLB, to name a few - but their in-house number font was hugely influential and used by the majority of teams in the NFL through the '60s and '70s.
Gorgeous early-to-mid '40s Sand Knit sport cardigan in a deep reddish purple wool. Built like a tank with bulletproof construction and tight stitching. Large yellow sewn "A" patch on left chest. Heavy duty original tonal buttons (one button missing). Two large front pockets. Double yellow stripes on left sleeve. Rib knit cuffs. Taped seam at back of collar. A perfect example of how "they don't make 'em like this anymore". A few tiny holes/snags but in unbelievable condition for its 80 year age. Inside placket has a patch with owner/player's embroidered name.
Made in Chicago, USA.
