Similar to sukajan souvenir jackets, cruise jackets were commissioned by American sailors as souvenirs, commemorating their tour serving on a particular ship. Often dark wool jackets, embroidered with patriotic or military motifs, ship name(s) and locations, sailors occasionally still have them made today, though vintage examples with their much higher quality and collectibility remain highly sought-after.
A common type of cruise jacket is the Mediterranean cruise. This particular one was made for a sailor whose '68-'70 tours on the USS Columbus (CG-12) and USS Albany (CG-10) took him through France, Spain, Italy, Green, Malta and Turkey. The front is embroidered with his name, Wayne, and two small eagles, while the back features tour details and an incredible scene with Lady Liberty riding an eagle over the water. Black wool body with satin lining. VKK zipper in good working order. Adjustable buttoned cuffs.
